Countdown to Graduation!!

2 months & 26 days

*Graduation Day is June 29th

** Week One- April 3- 6

————————————————————

This week, we will be learning about SPRING and WEATHER PATTERNS. We will learn about plant life cycles, clouds, precipitation, wind, and RAINBOWS! Our class will create many beautiful crafts using natural and recycled materials including bird feeders, our nature names, and a rainbow windsock.

For S.T.E.M. we will be creating our own sprout houses and growing a bean plant! Each child will create his/her own greenhouse environment using a Ziploc like bag, moist paper towel, and bean seed. Being in control of the process will help them take ownership over their project and feel proud of their accomplishment when it sprouts. The children will also get to take ome a small pot in which they will plant  some flower seeds with you! I will give them each a small book to document their flowers growth and to track how many times they water it and where it is placed in or out of your home.

The children will also have the opportunity to experiment and explore rainbows with prisms! The kids have already expressed interest in rainbows but this week we will really get to learn the scientific properties of how they are formed. To mix in rainbow colors, plant anatomy, and nature, we will be dying white flowers the different colors of the rainbow! This will be not only beautiful but also a good visual on how a plant “drinks” up water and distributes it to different parts.

Week Two- April 9 – 13

This week we will be traveling through Europe! We will “travel” to the UK, France, Italy, and Germany while learning about traditional foods, music, clothing, art, sport, famous monuments, and their varying environments. While we are adventuring through Europe, we will be making crafts that represent each country, making/trying traditional foods (pasta, croissants, kartoffelpuffers, and shortbread cookies) listening to the national anthems, and listening to a story in each language or accent.

Additionally, The class will learn more about Teachers! I will share my experience being a teacher, inform the children about the various types of teachers, and discuss their questions about what and who teachers are, how a person becomes a teacher, and why a teacher is so important to the community. the kids will also have the fun opportunity to be teacher for the day!

Week Three- April 16 – 20

This week, we will investigate INSECTS! The children will learn the different parts of an insects body, their shared characteristics such as an exoskeleton, and the various species of ant, beetle, bee, butterfly, and moth. The class will create their own insect dioramas, a chart labeling the insects bodies, and artistic representations of butterflies. We of course want to continue with our thought of respecting nature so we will not be capturing wild insects to observe in class. We will, however, be given small caterpillars to raise until they turn into butterflies!!

Our school will also be visited by the Critter Squad! They will bring along a variety of insect, arachnid, and reptile friends to show off and teach us a bit more about.

Monthly Academic Focus

Academically, we will be going over the Letters: Vv and Xx. Each week, we will focus on one letter/sound and practice writing it, review words that start with that sound, search for things in our classroom that start with that sound, and read a book about that letter and its sound. We will also continue listening to the zoophonics song to help the children learn their letter names and sounds in a more entertaining way. We will be reviewing ending Family words using the sounding out methods we have learned so far. We will learn to read these words by blending sounds from left to right and matching them to picture words!

For math, the children will have the opportunity to create flower and insect patterns using our class tangram shapes. This will help them practice identifying the shapes, figure out which shape best fits where, and enhance puzzle skills. Our class will practice going over numbers 60-79 with the 100’s pocket chart, the Montessori Tens Board and beads, and our unifix blocks. These materials will allow us to match the quantities with its appropriate number. We will also practice reading numbers from left to right and how our two digit numbers all have an identifying number in the front followed by our unchanging 0-9 pattern (6 for 60’s & 7 for 70’s).

We have a number of students in the school allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, in order to keep them safe we ask that you please do not send your child to school with any products containing nuts. If you would like a list of nut-free food suggestions let me know and I will get you a list!

– And lastly, a personal request from myself, please try to label all of your child’s items! Many families buy the same things and sometimes other students or teachers may move your child’s items mistakenly; labeling your things will greatly help avoid any mishaps!

Raspberries Dive DEEP Into Spring Weather, Insects And Nature

Hello Raspberry Families!

Welcome back and I hope you all had a wonderful break!

Weather and seasons are one of the most important themes we teach in the preschool curriculum. Because my Raspberries are so curious I will encourage them to discover the world around them—especially seasons, weather, insects and nature. At this point , we’ve become comfortable with all the elements of our morning routine in the circle discussion (counting /taking attendance, talking about what day it is, discussing the weather and so on). Must say that I love the sense of amazement our kiddos have when they look out the window and check the weather—even on a rainy day!

And much more

Week Two

This week we will focus on insects, it’s body parts and  importance in our environment. We will also  bring the weather cycle to life for our students with a variety of fine/gross motor skills (fingerplay/ songs)as  to help them commit the cycle to memory (Precipitation is when rain is falling from a cloud. Accumulation is when rain falls from a cloud and collects in a puddle. Evaporation is when water rises to the sky. Condensation is when water collects into clouds. Precipitation (rain) happens after condensation)

I know what you’re thinking—that’s a lot to explain, and it’s pretty scientific. But we don’t need to dwell on complex technical definitions to get the point across.

Curriculum

Theme: Spring

Value: Patience

Color: Yellow / Rainbow

Multicultural Visit: Europe

Animal: Insects

Community Helper: Teacher

Additional Theme: Weather Cycle

Letters/Sounds: J, K, Q

Shape: Diamond

Numbers: 13 & 14

As in every preschool classroom, these plans may evolve to better suit the interests of the children. I will be updating parents with pictures, videos, and write ups of what the children are learning and doing during the day. These will be posted to Brightwheel.

As stated above, over the month of February I will be teaching your kids about Spring, patience, teachers, insects, Europe, Cesar Chavez Day, weather cycles, diamonds, rainbows, the color yellow, the numbers 13 & 14, and finally the letters “J”, “K”, and “Q”. I will also be incorporating our previous monthly letters, shapes, and numbers when appropriate.

The activities I have planned for this coming week will focus on Cesar Chavez, Springtime, and rainbows. For the second week we will be focusing on all sorts of insects.

Some of the activities you can look forward to seeing and hearing about are…

– A brief history on Cesar Chavez

The kids will learn that Cesar Chavez was a Mexican American non-violent civil rights leader who helped farm workers receive better safety conditions.

– Insect Yoga

We will use the practice of yoga to create a fun gross motor activity about insects. Some of the poses/movements we will be doing will be butterfly pose, “slug pose” (Child’s pose), “fly pose” (airplane pose), etc.

– The letter J!

We will learn what it looks like, the sound it makes, and sound out many words that begin with “J”.

– Cut & paint our own flower

We will continue to work on our fine motor skills by cutting the edges of a paper plate to create flower petals. Afterwards we will paint them to decorate our classroom for Spring!

Reminders

If your child has a birthday this month feel free to come celebrate with us!!

– We celebrate during our lunchtime around 11:15

– If you’re bringing a treat, we ask that it not include frosting, as it is just before our nap time.

– Please be aware of allergies – NO nuts!

– Just give us a heads up!

Be aware of your child’s cubby!

– Please keep it stocked! (Shirts, shorts, pants, jackets, diapers, underwear, etc.) You never know when an accident is going to happen!

– I also graciously ask that you bring in a container of baby wipes (yes, even if your child is potty trained!). I have found that on new playground the children constantly get extremely dirty and the easiest way to remove the dirt is a baby wipe. I hate sending your children home full of filth, so please help me clean them!

– If you plan on parking in our lot, we ask that you please limit your stay to 10 minutes. Lingering in the lot makes it difficult for other parents trying to pick up their child on time.

– I know saying goodbye can be hard, but you can do it and so can your kid!! Remember to keep a consistent routine throughout the year, prepare your child for your departure, validate their feelings, and remind them that you will be back.

– Hot lunch will continue to be $5 when ordered in advance, however if ordered the day of or by the week it will be billed at $6.

Circle Time

During our circle time, we begin our class by singing a good morning song, counting how many kiwis came to school, the weather and days of the week. This is also when we introduce the activities as well as reviewing letters and numbers.

First Week

On our first week of April, we will be focusing on spring.  We’ll have a sorting activity, make sensory bottles and a flower collage. Through these activities, the kiwis will learn that flowers begin to grow, we see more insects and the weather changes in the spring.

We will also practice being patient by reading a story and learning a breathing exercise. We’ll also try some yoga poses to practice our breathing and how to calm our body when we need to be patient.

Second Week

During our second week of April, our kiwis will be learning about insects.  We’ll make a list of what makes an animal an insect as well as identifying some insects from our animal toy bin. We will also make a diagram of the metamorphosis of the butterfly.  By having real live caterpillars in our classroom, the kiwis will experience the metamorphosis first hand.

Third & Fourth Week

For our second half of the month, we will be learning about the weather, our community helper the teacher, as well as Europe.

We will also have an emergency drill on the third week of April and a Disney dress up day on the 25th. Please see the calendar towards the bottom of this email.

For our potty training kiwis:

Please bring extra clothing as we will be moving forward  to underwear after the spring break. We will only be doing pull-ups for nap time to those who need it. Kiwis who are not potty trained by the end of the school year in June, will not be able to move up to become a strawberry/ raspberry.

(We highly recommend to bring at least 4 pairs of underwear, pants, extra sock and shoes. Also for nap time we encourage you to  bring pull ups that have the side openings.)

Value: patience

Multicultural visit: Europe

For the month of April,  we will be focusing on spring and the weather!  During circle time we will talk about how we are now in the month of April, and now that the season has changed from winter to spring we should be experiencing changes in the weather.

We will spend a portion of circle time singing our “Weather Watcher” song and using the weather section of our calendar to make observations about each day’s weather.  We will also sing other spring time songs such as “Spring Time,”  “10 Little Ducks,” “Rainbow Colors,” and “Plant a Little Seed.”  Also, we will read fun books that incorporate our multiple themes such as Planting A Rainbow, The Tiny Seed, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

In the art center, we will create a giant hand print rainbow while we learn about the color order of a rainbow!  We will also make watercolor flowers out of coffee filters.

In the science center, we will continue to water our plants and observe their growth.  We will talk about how plants need both sun and water for healthy growth.

If you have and questions about our themes or activities, feel free to ask!

Reminders

– If you plan on parking in the lot, we ask that you to please limit your stay to 10 minutes. Lingering in the lot makes it difficult for other parents trying to pick up/drop off their child on time.

– I know saying goodbye can be hard, but you can do it and so can your child!! Remember to keep a consistent routine throughout the year, prepare your child for your departure, validate their feelings, and remind them that you will be back.

– Hot lunch will continue to be $5 when ordered in advance, however if ordered the day of or by the week it will be billed at $6.

– Date Night is every other Saturday from 5:00pm-12:00am. $15/hr for an individual child or $20/hr for a pair of siblings (min. charge is $60). Dinner and a movie are also provided.

– We are now NUT FREE!

If you have any other questions about the parent handbook feel free to ask myself, Gabriel, or Ms. Annie.

Since the school will be closed on Friday (3/23) we will also be doing Show and Tell on Thursday.

Thank you to those of you that have already volunteered to bring in fruit, vegetables, and/or juice! Your support helps to make our class a success. Ms. Lorraine and I greatly appreciate it!

I hope you all enjoy the events this week and have a wonderful Spring Break!!

Curriculum

Theme: Environment

Value: Respecting Nature

Color: Green

Multicultural Visit: Ireland

Animal: Dinosaurs

Community Helper: Chef

Additional Theme: Plant Life Cycle (fruit, vegetable, flower)

Letters/Sounds: E, O, U

Shape: Rectangle

Numbers: 11 & 12

As in every preschool classroom, these plans may evolve to better suit the interests of the children. I will be updating parents with pictures, videos, and write ups of what the children are learning and doing during the day. These will be posted to Brightwheel.

Since this a class designed for two and three year olds, many of the learning activities we will be doing will involve reading stories, singing songs, creating simple art projects, and having light discussions in order to keep the kids engaged and having fun.  This is a class for them to expand their minds and grow as both individuals and intellectuals, while also feeling free to be themselves.

As stated above, over the month of February I will be teaching your kids about the environment, respecting nature, chefs, dinosaurs, Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day, rectangles, the color green, the numbers 11 & 12, and finally the letters “E”, “O”, and “U”. I will also be incorporating our previous monthly letters, shapes, and numbers when appropriate.

The activities I have planned for this week will focus on dinosaurs and chefs, as well as finishing up our theme of respecting nature and the environment.

Some of the activities you can look forward to seeing and hearing about are…

– Transferring our sprouted seeds into a planter

The kids have been eagerly watching their seeds grow – forming stalks and roots right before their eyes. They will gently transfer their little plants into a pot where they will add soil and water for further growth.

– Learning all about the existence of dinosaurs

We will have a discussion about dinosaurs where the kids will learn that dinosaurs once walked on the same ground that we live on! They will learn the meaning of the word dinosaur, as well as what it means to be extinct and what a fossil is.

– The letter E!

We will learn what it looks like, the sound it makes, and sound out many words that begin with “E”

– What is a chef?

The kids will learn what a chef is and brainstorm all the meals a chef can make. We will then review some healthy foods and become chefs ourselves, because we’re making SMOOTHIES!

Kiwi’s Learn About Eating Healthy And Where Produce Comes From

March is almost gone!

We are finishing off the month and getting ready for Spring. We’ll have an Egg Hunt on Tuesday, March 20th.

Thank you to all the parents who have shown support to not only the kiwis, but also our teachers and school. We try not to miss any opportunity to make it a learning experience for our students. By having different monthly themes, learning about community helpers, values and other academic topics, we try to have a well rounded curriculum.  Of course, with very curious students, our curriculum is tentative and may be altered.

I hope that everyone has had a chance to meet our new Teacher’s Assistant for the kiwi class, Ms. Christine. She enjoys reading with the kids and is eager to get to know our kiwis.

Like always, please make sure you have the latest version of the Brightwheel app for daily updates, communication and our calendar (There’s a calendar tab in the Brightwheel app).

Circle Time

During our circle time, we begin our class by singing a good morning song, counting how many kiwis came to school today, the weather and days of the week. This is also when we introduce the activities as well as reviewing letters and numbers.

This Week

During this last week of March, we will be focusing on our community helper, a Chef.  By learning more about fruits and veggies, the Kiwi’s will learn about eating healthy as well as where the produce comes from. To finish off this topic, we will have a smoothie tasting day on Thursday, 3/22.  Please sign up to bring  fruit, vegetable, juice or be a parent volunteer (the sign up list is by the cubbies, first come first serve).  We will be making the smoothies in class after circle time around 9:30am.

Due to our short week, we will be having Show & Tell on Thursday rather than Friday. The school will be closed on Friday, March 23rd to begin our spring break. School will reopen on Tuesday, April 3rd.
